Overview

Agarisaki Lighthouse is a 12-meter lighthouse in Yonaguni Town, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture, watching over vessels navigating the waters around Yonaguni Island, known as Japan's westernmost inhabited island.

Highlights

  • A lighthouse on record as built in 1972, standing 12 meters tall
  • Its role watching over maritime traffic around Yonaguni Island
  • Views from the cape on the island's eastern side
  • A vantage point overlooking the surrounding sea

History

The lighthouse was established on May 15, 1972, and has since served maritime safety around Yonaguni. No detailed anecdotes about the structure itself survive, but it remains marked on charts as a fixture on the island's eastern side.

Access

The lighthouse stands within Yonaguni Town, reached via the island's local roads. Getting to Yonaguni Island itself is typically done by air or ferry from Ishigaki and other points. Public transport on the island is limited, so a rental car is the practical way to get around; it helps to check flight and ferry schedules and road conditions before visiting.

Best season

The lighthouse can be visited year-round, but typhoon season (summer through autumn) can bring rough seas and flight or ferry cancellations, so it's worth checking weather updates regularly.

Did you know?

💡 The name "Agarisaki" literally points to a cape on the island's eastern side; at 12 meters, the lighthouse isn't especially tall, but it has long functioned as a landmark guiding vessels through the surrounding waters.

    岬の先端に建つ真っ白な灯台。晴れた日は海の青との対比が見事で、日の出前から三脚を立てて何十枚も撮りました。人も少なく穴場です。
