Overview

Hokuseikojima is an uninhabited islet in the Senkaku Islands, administratively part of Tonoshiro Senkaku in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture. It sits just to the northwest of the larger Kuba Island (Huangwei), and its Japanese name literally reflects that position, meaning the small island northwest of Kuba. There are no records of habitation, and it is not open for landing or tourism.

Highlights

  • A small silhouette nestled to the northwest of Kuba Island
  • A rocky landscape left in its natural, untouched state
  • The solitary presence of an islet alone in the open East China Sea
  • Its geographic role as one part of the Senkaku island group

History

The islet has long been counted among the satellite islands attached to Kuba Island within the Senkaku group. For much of its history it had no individual name, but the designation Hokuseikojima was later assigned, clarifying its place on maps and in official records. While the surrounding seas have been known as fishing grounds, the island itself has remained undeveloped and in its natural state.

Access

Located far out in the East China Sea, well beyond Ishigaki Island, the islet has no scheduled boats or tour routes. As an uninhabited rock with no facilities, it cannot be visited by the general public. For information on its location and the surrounding waters, please refer to official sources such as the Japan Coast Guard or local authorities.

Best season

Lying in subtropical open ocean, the calmest seas generally come from early summer through autumn, yet this is also a typhoon corridor where conditions change quickly. Since actually approaching the island is not envisioned, any notion of season should be treated only as a guide to the weather over the surrounding waters.

  2. 2Grasp the positional relationship between Kuba Island and Hokuseikojima
  3. 3Organize information on the understanding that it is uninhabited and cannot be landed on
  4. 4Check the latest official information on maritime weather and sea conditions

Did you know?

💡 The name Hokuseikojima simply expresses that the island lies to the northwest of neighboring Kuba Island. In Chinese it is also called Dolphin Island, and it is said to be the largest of the satellite islets strung along the western side of Kuba. The very difference in names mirrors the historical context in which this small island sits.
