Overview

Ikemajima Lighthouse stands at the northern tip of Ikema Island, part of Miyakojima City in Okinawa Prefecture. On an island with few tall structures, it stands out clearly as it watches over the surrounding sea.

Highlights

  • One of the island's largest lighthouses, at the northern tip of Ikema Island
  • Open, unobstructed views in every direction
  • Its light shining out over the East China Sea at night
  • Island scenery reached by crossing the Ikema Bridge

History

Detailed records of its construction are scarce, but it is said to be the tallest structure on the island, and at night it is thought to have long lit the surface of the East China Sea to help guide passing ships safely. Ikema Island is a small island connected to Miyakojima by the Ikema Bridge, and the lighthouse sits at its northernmost point.

Access

From the main island of Miyakojima, cross the Ikema Bridge onto Ikema Island and continue north to reach the lighthouse. The route, including the bridge, is best traveled by car, with a short walk from the parking area to the lighthouse itself. The coastal road offers little shade, so it is worth preparing for the sun.

Best season

The lighthouse can be viewed year-round, but Miyakojima is prone to typhoons in summer, so it is worth checking the weather before visiting. On clear days with good visibility, the view of the sea from the lighthouse is especially striking.

  4. 4Cross back over the Ikema Bridge to return to Miyakojima

Did you know?

💡 Said to be the tallest structure on the island, Ikemajima Lighthouse commands attention both for the view it offers and for its own presence when seen from a distance, thanks to the absence of anything blocking the sightlines around it. At night it casts its light out over the East China Sea as a marker for passing vessels.
