Overview

Asahikawa Dam is a dam built on the middle reaches of the Asahi River, a first-class river flowing through Okayama Prefecture. It straddles the border between Tazuta in the Takebe area of Kita-ku, Okayama City, and Koze in Kibichuo Town, Kaga District, where a grand waterside landscape unfolds. It makes a fine stop on a drive or a nature outing.

Highlights

  • The dam body that blocks the middle reaches of the Asahi River
  • An imposing structure standing 45 meters tall
  • Scenery woven by the reservoir and surrounding mountains
  • A location straddling two municipalities

History

Asahikawa Dam was completed in 1954. It has a height of 45 meters and was built at a point at an elevation of about 109 meters. By damming the middle reaches of the first-class Asahi River, it has long supported the region's water resources.

Access

The dam sits astride the boundary between the Takebe area (Tazuta) of Kita-ku in Okayama City and Kibichuo Town (Koze). Because it lies among the hills along the Asahi River, access is basically by car. Please confirm the detailed route on a map or official information before setting out.

Best season

The fresh greenery of early summer and the vivid foliage of autumn, when water and mountain greenery shine, are recommended. On clear daytime hours, the sky and mountains reflected in the reservoir are especially beautiful.
