History
According to temple tradition, the name San'yū-ji derives from the renaming of "San'yō-an," a hermitage within Keiun-ji temple, an act attributed to Ikeda Terumasa. The temple's founding is dated to 1632, and it has continued as a Rinzai Myōshin-ji temple since.
