Overview

Kurashiki Tivoli Park was an urban theme park formerly located in Kotobuki-cho, Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, directly in front of the north exit of JR Kurashiki Station. It opened on 18 July 1997, inheriting design and know-how from the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. During its operating period until its closure on 31 December 2008, it drew about 18 million visitors.

Highlights

  • Attractions, gardens and theaters themed around Denmark and Hans Christian Andersen were spread across the grounds
  • The park was planted with 50,000 trees and 900,000 plants of 250 species, giving a green coverage of 45%
  • It featured 15 fountains and 1,000 benches, emphasizing a relaxed, open atmosphere
  • Several educational facilities for learning about Danish nature, history and culture were also developed

History

The park was built on a 12-hectare site formerly occupied by the Manju plant of Kurashiki Boseki (Kurabo). Its guiding philosophy was to create a heartful park where people of all ages could relax and connect with one another. After closure, the land was returned to Kurabo and redeveloped as Ario Kurashiki, Mitsui Outlet Park Kurashiki and Kurashiki Mirai Park.

Access

The park stood adjacent to the north exit of JR Kurashiki Station. The former site has since been redeveloped as commercial and park facilities in front of the station.

Best season

With 50,000 trees and numerous plants, the grounds were laid out so that the greenery and flowers could be enjoyed through each of the four seasons.
