Overview
Usa Jingu is a Shinto shrine in the city of Usa, Oita Prefecture, also commonly known as Usa Hachimangu. It is regarded as the head shrine of some 44,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan and serves as the ichinomiya of the former Buzen Province. Together with Iwashimizu Hachimangu and Hakozakigu, it is counted among the three great Hachiman shrines of Japan.

History
Said to have been founded in 725, it is regarded as the first of the shrines dedicated to the deity Hachiman. In ancient times it was treated, together with Ise Shrine, as one of the two imperial ancestral shrines and received imperial patronage. Its prestige is considered second only to that of Ise Shrine.

The shrine is located in the city of Usa, Oita Prefecture. Local bus services from the nearest railway station are convenient for the visit.
Best season
The precincts can be visited throughout the four seasons. Periods of fresh greenery and seasons of mild weather are well suited to walking the grounds.
