Overview

Matsubara Dam is a multipurpose dam in the mountains of Hita City, Ōita Prefecture. It was built across the Ōyama River, the upper main stream of the Chikugo River, one of Kyushu's great rivers. Completed in 1972, the dam works together with the Shimouke Dam upstream to manage flooding and water supply in the Chikugo River basin. Surrounded by the deep greens of the Kyushu mountains, its quiet reservoir offers a peaceful lakeside setting that makes a rewarding detour on a trip through the Hita area.

Highlights

  • A multipurpose dam completed in 1972 on the upper Chikugo main stream
  • Works in tandem with the Shimouke Dam to protect the river basin
  • A calm reservoir cradled by the greens of the Kyushu mountains
  • An easy lakeside detour on a journey through Hita

History

Matsubara Dam was planned to curb flooding in the upper Chikugo River basin and to secure a stable water supply downstream, and it was completed in 1972. The Chikugo River is one of the largest rivers in northern Kyushu, and by damming the upper reaches of its main stream, the Ōyama River, Matsubara holds an important place in the region's flood-control history. Paired with the Shimouke Dam just upstream, the two structures work in tandem to protect the basin. For details of its construction and operation, please refer to official sources.

Access

The dam lies in the mountains of Hita City, Ōita Prefecture, at roughly 33.19°N, 130.99°E. The usual approach is by car from central Hita, heading upstream along the Chikugo River through winding mountain roads. Public transport is limited, so it is best to confirm access routes and parking in advance through official information.

Best season

Spring into early summer, when fresh greenery blankets the hills, and autumn, when the surrounding mountains turn to color, are especially lovely. The greens and reds reflected on the reservoir's surface change with the seasons. Water releases may be seen during rainier periods, but as this depends on weather and operations, checking ahead is recommended.

Did you know?

💡 The Ōyama River that Matsubara Dam holds back becomes part of the Chikugo River, one of Kyushu's most important waterways. Standing almost like a sibling to the Shimouke Dam upstream, the two dams together regulate the waters of the Chikugo system—a distinctive feature of this quiet mountain site.
