Overview

Hisashi Dam straddles Furukawa in Ajimu, Usa City, and the Hisashi district of Yamaga in Kitsuki City, Oita Prefecture. It stands on the Yamakura River within the Yakkan River system. This embankment dam is 40 metres high, and the water it holds is used for irrigation and industry. Its reservoir, Lake Hisashi, spreads a calm surface among the mountains of northern Oita.

History

Begun in 1964 and completed after later construction, Hisashi Dam serves both agriculture and industry. It is 40 metres high with a 263-metre crest, and retains about 4,800,000 cubic metres of water. The volume of the dam body is around 431,000 cubic metres, and the surface area of Lake Hisashi is roughly 370,000 square metres. For fuller details, please refer to official sources.

Access

Located on the boundary between Furukawa in Ajimu, Usa City, and Hisashi in Yamaga, Kitsuki City (around 33.44 N, 131.43 E). Set in the mountains of northern Oita, it is most practically reached by car. Some approach roads are narrow, so please check current road conditions and access through official information.

Best season

As a mountain reservoir, it is at its most beautiful with the fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage, when the water and the hillsides share their colours.
