Overview

The Oita Prefectural Art Center was a publicly run cultural complex that once stood in Oita City, operated by Oita Prefecture. Affectionately known as Geikan, it opened in 1977 and was designed by Yasui Architects & Engineers. For years it served as a hub for the artistic and cultural activities of the prefecture's people. Although the building no longer survives in its original form, it remains a place that cannot be left out of any account of Oita's cultural life.

History

The Art Center opened in Oita City in 1977. Its design was the work of Yasui Architects & Engineers, a firm with a long record in public and cultural buildings. From its opening it supported the cultural pursuits of local residents through exhibitions and events. For an accurate account of its later operation and any successor institution, the official information of Oita Prefecture is the best source to consult.

Access

The site lies in Oita City, around latitude 33.24, longitude 131.63. The gateway is Oita Station, served by the JR Nippo and Kyudai Main Lines, close to the heart of the city. As the state of the former site and nearby cultural facilities may have changed, anyone considering a visit is advised to plan after checking the latest information from Oita City and Oita Prefecture.

Best season

A trip centred on a cultural facility is little affected by weather and can be enjoyed throughout the year. Spring and autumn pair well with a stroll through central Oita and are comfortable seasons for walking. Since special exhibitions and events vary by period, it is worth confirming what is on through official sources if you have something particular in mind.
