The Oita Marine Palace Aquarium stands on the Takasaki Yamashita Coast in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, and is commonly known as "Umitamago." It first opened in 1964 as the Oita Marine Palace Ecological Aquarium, and reopened on 1 April 2004 under its present name.

History

The aquarium opened in 1964 as the Oita Marine Palace Ecological Aquarium and reopened on 1 April 2004 as the Oita Marine Palace Aquarium "Umitamago." It is a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA), and is accredited as a museum-equivalent facility under the Museum Act of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
