History
Maruyama Shrine is a Hachiman shrine standing on a low hill in the Uwa district of western Imaichi, and its former shrine rank was that of a village shrine. The Higo (Bungo) Highway passes in front of the shrine, and a 660-meter stretch of old road paved with flagstones, running from the vicinity of the shrine, has been designated a historic site of Ōita Prefecture as a "sankin-kōtai road." This old road along the highway conveys the region's history to the present day.
