Overview
Jōkōji is a temple in Jōetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and serves as the head temple of the Shinshū Jōkōji branch of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism. Its mountain name is Kangi Yuyaku-zan, and its formal temple name is Jōdo Shinshū Kōgyōji; tradition holds that it was founded by Shinran, the founder of Jōdo Shinshū.

History
At its height, the temple is said to have overseen roughly 90 affiliated temples across the former provinces of Echigo, Shinano, and Dewa. It was once treated as a temple of special status within the Ōtani branch of Shinshū Buddhism, but became independent as the Shinshū Jōkōji branch in 1952 (Shōwa 27), a status it retains today.
