Overview
Sōmon Falls is a waterfall in Tenkawa, Nara Prefecture, chosen as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Its total drop is about 70 meters. The upper section forms a tiered cascade divided into several steps, while the lower section plunges in a single rush through a narrow cleft in the rock face, giving it a strikingly varied form. Reached by entering the Misen River from the Misen trail in the Ōmine Mountains and ascending the gorge before climbing the rocky ridge known as Ura-Sōmon, from which it can finally be viewed at a distance, it is a hidden waterfall in every sense.

History
Sōmon Falls hangs in a deep valley of the Ōmine range, set amid the rugged nature of Misen and the Misen River, long known as a mountain of Shugendō asceticism. Precisely because it lies in a gorge beyond easy human reach, its solemn form has earned a place among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls as a select cascade. The falls themselves were carved by nature; for information on climbing and entry to the area, official sources are the reliable reference.
Access
The falls lie in the Ōmine Mountains of Tenkawa, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture (around 34.20°N, 135.89°E). There is essentially no general route to the base of the falls; instead, one ascends the Misen River gorge along the Misen trail and views the falls from a height on the Ura-Sōmon rocky ridge (commonly called the Sōmon Falls Terrace). From the summit of Mount Kannonmine a little to the north, the falls can also be made out in the distance toward Misen. Because this is a demanding route for experienced climbers, always confirm equipment, weather, and entry conditions via official information.
Best season
Early summer, with abundant water and vivid fresh greenery, and autumn, when the gorge takes on color, are the most rewarding seasons. However, ascending the Misen River becomes far more dangerous with high water or bad weather, so avoid the rainy and typhoon seasons and choose a day of stable conditions. Entry during lingering-snow or freezing periods calls for particular caution; check the latest conditions via official information.

Did you know?
💡 Because there is no general route to stand directly beneath the falls, most people view its full form from a distance atop the Ura-Sōmon rocky ridge, commonly called the Sōmon Falls Terrace. The sight of the roughly 70-meter drop taken in at a glance is a hidden scene of the Ōmine range that only those who have overcome the arduous ascent can behold.
