History
Mount Kasasute is one summit of the Ōmine range, long a stage for the austerities of mountain ascetics (yamabushi), and the Ōmine Okugake Trail crosses its ridge. This trail is the rugged Shugendō path linking Yoshino and Kumano, handed down as part of the World Heritage 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' The passage of this route, layered with faith and history, gives the 1,352.7-metre peak much of its character.
Access
The mountain stands on the border of Totsukawa and Shimokitayama villages (roughly 33.98°N, 135.90°E). It lies in a deeply mountainous part of southern Nara Prefecture where public transport is scarce, so reaching the trailhead is essentially done by car. Because the Ōmine Okugake is a steep ascetic path, be sure to confirm routes, times and required equipment in advance through official information and on-site guidance.
Best season
From early summer, when the mountain greenery deepens, to autumn, when the ridges change colour, is the suitable season for hiking. As a peak of over 1,300 metres, it calls for caution against sudden weather changes and winter snow, so check the latest conditions through official sources before setting out.
