Overview

Muryo-ji is a temple of the Honganji branch of Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Buddhism) in Shimoda-higashi, Kashiba, Nara Prefecture, bearing the mountain name Shotoku-san. Kashiba lies at the western edge of the Nara Basin, near the prefectural border with Osaka at the foot of Mount Nijo. Rooted in the Shimoda-higashi settlement, Muryo-ji has walked alongside its local congregation. The name Muryo ('immeasurable') derives from Amida Buddha, whose light and life are without limit, conveying the Pure Land faith to the present day.

History

Muryo-ji belongs to the Honganji branch of Jodo Shinshu and is formally styled Shotoku-san Muryo-ji. Jodo Shinshu, founded by Shinran, spread the nembutsu teaching of faith in Amida Buddha's original vow, and the Honganji branch is one of its central lineages. The name Muryo echoes Amida's epithets, the Buddha of Immeasurable Life and Immeasurable Light, and together with the mountain name Shotoku it expresses the temple's character. For details of its founding date and origins, please confirm with official sources or on-site information.
