Overview

Mount Unebi (Unebi-yama) rises in the southern part of the Nara Basin to a height of 198.8 metres and is a symbol of Kashihara City. Together with Mount Amanokagu and Mount Miminashi it forms the celebrated 「Yamato Sanzan」, of which it is the highest. It was once written with characters meaning 「fire mountain」 and was lovingly sung in the Manyoshu as 「Mizuyama」, the fresh mountain. In 2005 it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty along with the other two peaks, and lies within a Special Preservation Zone for Historic Landscapes, keeping alive the ancient scenery of Yamato.

Highlights

  • The highest of the Yamato Sanzan at 198.8 metres
  • An ancient peak sung as 「Mizuyama」 in the Manyoshu
  • The reputed funnel of an extinct crater at the summit
  • Scenery within a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Historic Landscape zone

History

Mount Unebi has been beloved by the people of Yamato since ancient times and appears in the Manyoshu poetry anthology. As one of the Yamato Sanzan alongside Amanokagu and Miminashi, it has symbolised the landscape of the Asuka and Fujiwara-kyo eras. Geologically, gneiss new rocks lie at the foot of the mountain while biotite and andesite appear from the middle slope upward, and the summit is said to retain the funnel of an extinct crater. On 14 July 2005 the three mountains were together designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and the surrounding area is protected as a Special Preservation Zone for Historic Landscapes.

Access

The mountain lies in Kashihara City, around latitude 34.49°N and longitude 135.78°E. Unebigoryo-mae Station on the Kintetsu Kashihara Line, JR Unebi Station and the Yamato-Yagi Station area serve as bases, from which the trailheads are within walking distance. As a low hill of about 200 metres it offers an easy climb of roughly an hour from the base. Please confirm exact trails and times on official sources.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when the fresh greenery shines, and autumn, when clear air opens up views of the Nara Basin, are especially recommended. Though low, the summit commands a view of the other two Yamato Sanzan peaks and the surrounding plain, changing its face with the seasons. Summer offers cool shade, and even in winter the mountain is relatively easy to climb.

Did you know?

💡 The elevation is given as 198.8 metres, yet the third-order triangulation point at the summit is measured at 198.49 metres, a slight difference. The summit is said to bear the funnel of an extinct crater, and the mountain is counted among the 「Nara Hyakuyuzan」 (100 mountains of Nara). Its fresh appearance, sung as 「Mizuyama」 in the Manyoshu, recalls the origin of its name.
