Overview

The Tatsuta River is a first-class river in Nara Prefecture belonging to the Yamato River system. Its upper reach is also called the Ikoma River after Ikoma City, and its middle reach the Heguri River after the town of Heguri, so its name changes from section to section. Flowing south along the eastern foot of the Ikoma mountains, it carves the Ikoma and Heguri valleys before joining the Yamato River around the town of Ikaruga. Long celebrated as a place for autumn foliage, it is a river that captures the spirit of Nara.

Highlights

  • One of Nara's foremost autumn foliage spots, sung of in waka poetry since ancient times
  • A flow that changes name by reach: the Ikoma, the Heguri and the Tatsuta
  • Valley scenery carved into the Ikoma and Heguri valleys along the eastern foot of the range
  • A first-class river of the Yamato River system, joining it at the town of Ikaruga

History

The Tatsuta River has been loved as a place of autumn colours since ancient times and appears again and again in classical Japanese literature and waka poetry, giving it a distinguished heritage. The alternate names of the upper and middle reaches, the Ikoma River and the Heguri River, come from the place names of Ikoma City and the town of Heguri, reflecting how closely the river has been bound up with local life. For the detailed history of its flood control and development, please refer to official information.

Access

The Tatsuta River flows through Nara Prefecture (around 34.596 degrees north, 135.718 degrees east), with its lower reach emptying into the Yamato River in the town of Ikaruga, Ikoma District. As the basin spans the Ikoma, Heguri and Ikaruga areas, it is best to head from the nearest station to whichever section you wish to visit. Some stretches have riverside walking paths and parks. Please check official sources for specific transport access and parking.

Best season

For the Tatsuta River, autumn foliage is above all the season to see. Famous since ancient times as a place for autumn colours, the sight of the tinted trees reflected on the water is exceptional. Spring brings cherry blossoms and fresh greenery along the banks, so the waterside offers a different face in each season. Please check official sources for the latest on the peak foliage period.

Did you know?

💡 Though it is a single flow, the Tatsuta River carries the unusual trait of changing its name by section: the Ikoma River upstream, the Heguri River midstream, and the Tatsuta River downstream. This reflects how the river runs through several districts as it descends from the Ikoma mountains toward Ikaruga. In the world of the classics, the name Tatsuta River has been handed down bound together with the image of autumn leaves.
