Ikaruga Shrine stands in Ikaruga Town, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture. It sits on Mount Tenman, northeast of the World Heritage temple Horyu-ji, and enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the deity of learning. History

Ikaruga Shrine is counted among the four guardian shrines of Horyu-ji and has long been cherished as the shrine guarding the temple's northeast, its so-called demon gate direction. Its deity is Sugawara no Michizane, a faith reflected even in the name of its site, Mount Tenman.
