大谷山自然公園

Overview

Otaniyama Nature Park is a municipal park in the Otani district of Yamatotakada, Nara Prefecture, laid out on a hill known as Mount Otani. Opened in 1983, it is a green space where locals come to stroll and relax. The surrounding area sits within a dense cluster of ancient burial mounds belonging to the southern group of the Umami Kofun cluster, and at least two kofun are preserved within the park itself, making it a place where nature and history come together.

History

To the southeast of the park lies Tsukiyama Kofun, regarded as the principal tomb of the Umami Kofun cluster, and the Mount Otani area has long been a land of many burial mounds. Kofun large and small remain both inside the park and in the neighboring residential district. In 1593, Kyonyo, founder of the Otani branch of the Jodo Shinshu, is said to have visited Mount Otani. Delighted that its name matched the Otani associated with Shinran, he expanded a temple on the hill and relocated it westward; that temple later became the Yamato Otani Betsuin.
