Overview

Shigisan Gyokuzoin is a head temple of the Shigisan Shingon sect, standing on Mount Shigi in Heguri, Nara Prefecture. It is a sub-temple of Chogosonshi-ji, whose principal image is Bishamonten. Its name is said to derive from the Cintamani, the wish-granting jewel of Buddhism. Running a temple lodge, it lets visitors not only worship but stay overnight to savor Mount Shigi at dawn and dusk.

Highlights

  • A Shigisan Shingon sub-temple within Chogosonshi-ji
  • A name said to derive from the wish-granting Cintamani

History

Gyokuzoin has walked alongside the faith of Mount Shigi as one of the sub-temples that make up Chogosonshi-ji. It is also counted among the Thirteen Buddhist Sites of Yamato, a pilgrimage circuit of thirteen sacred places scattered across Nara. For its detailed founding date and the origins of its halls, please consult official information.

Access

The temple sits at Mount Shigi in Heguri, Nara Prefecture, near 34.61°N, 135.67°E. Though on the same mountain, it is a separate site from the neighboring Shigisan Onsen and lies within the precincts of Chogosonshi-ji. Visitors usually reach Mount Shigi by bus or car from the nearest station; check official sources for the detailed approach.

Best season

Autumn, when foliage colors the grounds, and the crisp air of winter into early spring make fine times to visit. A night at the lodge lets you feel the quiet of Mount Shigi after the daytime crowds depart and the freshness of the morning service. A prayerful atmosphere lingers through every season.
