Overview
Meshima is one of the islands making up the Danjo Islands, a small archipelago floating southwest of the Goto Islands and administratively part of Goto City in Nagasaki Prefecture. Remote and largely untouched, it is one of the islands the Japanese government has designated a 'national border remote island.'
Highlights
- ●A remote island forming part of the Danjo Islands group
- ●Its role as a national border remote island supporting Japan's territorial waters
- ●A little-visited location southwest of the main Goto Islands
- ●Views of the Danjo Islands' silhouette from the surrounding waters
History
Meshima and the wider Danjo Islands group are recognized as national border remote islands because of the role they play in defining Japan's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Administratively the island belongs to Goto City, and its position southwest of the main Goto Islands suggests it has long served as a maritime marker at the edge of Japan's waters. Detailed records of settlement or development on the island itself are difficult to confirm through public sources.
Access
No regular public ferry service to Meshima has been confirmed, so anyone planning a visit should contact Goto City or local tourism offices in advance to check on transportation and whether landing is possible. As with many national border remote islands, reaching it may require special arrangements or permission.
Best season
Because Meshima is an open-sea island, spring through early summer and autumn (after typhoon season) are generally considered calmer periods for sailing, though actual accessibility depends heavily on weather and sea conditions on the day.

Did you know?
💡 'National border remote islands' is a designation for islands that form the outer edge of Japan's territory and play a role in maintaining its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Meshima is counted among them, a small dot on the map that nonetheless helps define the extent of Japan's surrounding seas.
