History
During the era of shinbutsu-shugo, the syncretic blending of Shinto and Buddhist practice, a Buddhist temple called Onsenzan Manmyoji was established as the bettoji, the temple that administered the shrine. The very name 'Unzen' was once written with the characters for 'onsen' (hot spring), a spelling said to derive from the sango, or mountain name, of Manmyoji. In other words, the place-name of today's hot spring resort is itself tied to the history of this shrine and its associated temple. The shrine building itself, in the nagare-zukuri style, is also worth noting for its architectural form.
Access
The shrine is located in Yumachi, within the Unzen hot spring resort in Obama-cho, Unzen City. Bus or car access from Nagasaki City or Isahaya is the usual route, and the shrine sits within easy reach of Unzen Onsen's lodgings and the nearby Unzen Jigoku hot-spring area, making it easy to combine with a stroll around the resort.
Best season
Sitting at a relatively high elevation, Unzen is known for its fresh greenery in early summer and its autumn foliage. As a hot spring town, visiting the shrine alongside a hot bath during the cooler late-autumn to winter months is also a pleasant way to experience the area.
