Overview
The Arima River is a Class B river that flows east across the southern part of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, eventually emptying into the Ariake Sea.
Highlights
- ●A Class B river flowing east across southern Shimabara Peninsula into the Ariake Sea
- ●Ranked second in scale after the Chijiwa River on the peninsula
- ●Numerous tributaries joining mainly from the north
- ●Rural scenery of farmland and irrigation ponds along the basin
History
Most of its watershed lies within Minamishimabara City, though the river's headwaters extend into neighboring Unzen City as well. Among the rivers of the Shimabara Peninsula, it is considered second in scale only to the Chijiwa River, and it is fed by numerous tributaries joining mainly from the north.
Access
The river runs through a largely agricultural stretch of Minamishimabara, and its course can be viewed from local roads and farm paths along the banks. For specific viewing spots or parking, it's best to check with Minamishimabara's tourism information in advance.
Best season
Because nearly the entire basin, apart from the headwaters, is given over to rice paddies and farmland, the surrounding rural scenery is especially notable in early summer during rice planting and in autumn when the rice ripens.
