Overview
Shirakabako Royal Hill is a ski field on the shore of Lake Shirakaba in the Kitayama area of Chino, Nagano Prefecture. Its north-facing slope is grassy, gentle and open, making it well suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders working on their foundations. Rather than a place to test yourself on steep, punishing pitches, it is a hill for getting used to snow and linking easy, flowing lines. Unlike daytime-only resorts, Royal Hill also runs night skiing, so you can enjoy one more run under the lights after sunset. Set in the Lake Shirakaba highland resort, it lets you take in both snow and lakeside scenery.

- ●Night skiing available, so you can add a run after dark
- ●Easy access reachable even without four-wheel drive
History
Its history as a ski field runs deep, having opened in December 1961. For more than half a century it has supported winter leisure at Lake Shirakaba as a long-established slope, and it is currently operated by Suzuki Shokai Co., Ltd. That long familiarity has helped a welcoming atmosphere for beginners take root here.
Access
The resort sits around 36.10°N, 138.23°E on the shore of Lake Shirakaba. You can reach it by private car without four-wheel drive, though in heavy snow tire chains can help a great deal. Nearby highland areas such as Kurumayama and Kirigamine lie close by, making it a convenient base for touring the wider surroundings.
Best season
Deep winter, January through February, is the prime, easy-skiing period. Because night skiing is available, evening hours join the daytime as options, letting you make a longer day of it. Road conditions shift quickly after fresh snowfall, so come prepared with chains and other snow-road measures.
