
Overview
Mount Hotaka is the collective name for a group of peaks in the Hida Mountains of Chubu-Sangaku National Park, with the 3,190-meter Mount Okuhotaka as its highest peak. It is the third-highest mountain in Japan and is counted among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Mount Okuhotaka stands on the border between Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.

History
Mount Hotaka lies in the Hida Mountains of Chubu-Sangaku National Park and has long been known as the collective name for peaks centered on Mount Okuhotaka. Together with peaks such as Maehotaka, Kitahotaka and Nishihotaka, they are called the Hotaka Mountains, and with Mount Yari they are also referred to as the Yari-Hotaka range.
Access
Mount Okuhotaka stands on the border between Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.
Best season
As a high peak of 3,190 meters, climbing is generally suited to the summer mountaineering season when snow and weather conditions are more settled.
