Overview

Kurumayama is a 1,925-meter peak straddling the border of Chino and Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, and the highest point of the grassy Kirigamine highland. Its northwestern side is cloaked in forest while the southeastern side opens into sweeping meadows, and those broad slopes are also popular for paragliding. From near the summit, views can stretch to the Yatsugatake range, Mount Fuji, and the Northern Alps, making it a beloved destination for hiking and highland drives throughout the year.

Highlights

  • A grand panorama from the highest peak of Kirigamine at 1,925 meters
  • Wide-open meadows and an airy ridgeline on the southeastern side
  • Broad slopes also used for paragliding
  • Scenery that shifts through the seasons, from early-summer alpine flowers to winter snowfields

History

As the main peak of Kirigamine, Kurumayama has long been cherished as a scenic highland spot. Kirigamine is a gently formed landscape shaped by volcanic activity, and Kurumayama marks its highest point. The vast meadows are colored by seasonal wildflowers and nurture an ecosystem distinctive to the highlands. For a detailed account of the mountain's formation or the origin of its name, please refer to official sources or local interpretive signs.

Access

Its base straddles Chino and Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, and the mountain is known for being relatively easy to reach by car. The road to the foot does not require a four-wheel-drive vehicle, though tire chains can help greatly during heavy snow. By public transport, visitors typically take a local bus from a station on the JR Chuo Main Line. Bus services and lift operations vary by season, so please confirm with official information in advance.

Best season

Early summer through summer is especially recommended, when the meadows glow green and alpine plants and flowers come into bloom. At 1,925 meters, the highland stays cool even in summer, making for comfortable hiking. Autumn drapes the slopes in golden grasses, and winter turns the plateau into a snowfield and a stage for winter sports. As highland weather changes quickly, come prepared with warm layers and sturdy footwear in any season.
