The mountain takes its name from Takamagahara, the world of the sky deities in Japanese mythology. It lies on the border of Gunma and Nagano Prefectures and has long been called Mount Kandate on the Nagano side. It is also known by the names Arigamine and Shonami no Kashira.

It lies on the prefectural border, on the Minamisaku District side in Nagano and the Ueno village side in Gunma.
