Overview
The Komagane Highlands spread out at the foot of the Central Japanese Alps at an elevation of around 800 meters. Said to be the largest highland in the Ina Basin of southern Nagano Prefecture, they straddle the city of Komagane and the village of Miyada. The signature sight is the Senjojiki Cirque, a sky-high panorama reached by the Komagatake Ropeway. At the foot lie artificial lakes such as Onuma Lake and Komaga-ike Pond, along with inns and villas of the Hayataro Onsen. It is a year-round favorite where mountain sightseeing, hot springs, and lakeside strolls all come together.

History
The Komagane Highlands have long been enjoyed both as a gateway to the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains) and as a highland resort. The Komagatake Ropeway, used by climbers aiming for the summit of Kiso-Komagatake, serves as the base for sightseeing, while in winter the area bustles as a ski resort. Dotted with artificial lakes such as Onuma Lake and Komaga-ike Pond and with hydroelectric stations on the Otagiri and Nezumi rivers, the highland scenery has taken shape through a harmony of nature and human activity.
Access
Straddling the city of Komagane and the village of Miyada in Nagano Prefecture, the area lies at roughly 35.74 degrees north and 137.89 degrees east. Buses run from Komagane Station on the JR Iida Line toward the highlands and the ropeway station. It is also close to the Komagane Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, making car access convenient. The Senjojiki Cirque is reached via the Komagatake Ropeway. Please check operating status and timetables through official information.
Best season
Summer is ideal for escaping the heat, highland hiking, and climbing Kiso-Komagatake. In autumn the Senjojiki Cirque and the wider highlands turn brilliant with fall colors. In winter the Komagane Kogen ski area opens, offering snowy scenery and a round of the Hayataro Onsen hot springs. Because the elevation is high and the cirque especially cold, bring a layer even in summer and proper winter gear in the cold season.

💡 The highlands' symbol, the Senjojiki Cirque, is one of Japan's premier alpine viewpoints, reached in one swift ride to around 2,600 meters by the Komagatake Ropeway. The hot spring at the foot is called Hayataro Onsen after the legend of Hayataro, a spirited dog said to have lived in the area.
