History
The highland takes its name from Mount Tateshina, which rises to the north. Included in Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, the district developed as a summer retreat and villa area, drawing people who sought its cool climate and sweeping mountain views. It remains known as a place where nature conservation and tourism coexist.
Access
The highland lies in Chino, Nagano Prefecture (around 36.06 degrees north, 138.27 degrees east). The gateway is Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, from which visitors typically continue by bus or car to the various parts of the highland. Because facilities are spread over a wide area, traveling by car is convenient. Check official sources for seasonal bus services and current timetables.
Best season
Early summer through summer is ideal for escaping the heat, with crisp highland air and fresh greenery. Autumn brings larch and broadleaf foliage to the slopes, while winter offers clear skies and snowscapes. As the elevation is high and mornings and evenings turn cool, it is wise to bring an extra layer even in summer.
