  • A location easy to combine with Tateshina Highland sightseeing

History

The aquarium opened in 1993. Born on an inland highland far from any coast, it earned the title of Japan's highest-altitude aquarium and became one of the attractions of Tateshina Highland, a beloved summer retreat and tourist area. Its high-elevation location is itself the story that sets this facility apart.

Access

The aquarium stands on Tateshina Highland in Chino, Nagano Prefecture (around 36.07 degrees north, 138.30 degrees east). The gateway is Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, from which visitors head toward the highland by bus or car. As facilities are scattered across the highland, a car is convenient. Check official sources for current opening hours, fees and access.

Best season

Being an indoor facility, it can be enjoyed year-round regardless of the weather. Summer is a fine time to visit alongside a cool highland getaway, and it also makes a handy stop on a rainy day or during winter sightseeing. Planning it together with the surrounding highland attractions makes for a fuller trip.
