Kotaku-ji is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple in the Satoyamabe district of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Ryuun-zan, its principal image is Shakyamuni Nyorai, and its founding priest is said to be Sesso Ijjun. Established as the family temple of the Ogasawara clan, the military governors of Shinano Province, it grew so prosperous that its temple lands are said to have spanned well over a hundred thousand tsubo. This quiet Zen temple in the hills east of Matsumoto lets visitors touch both the history of a distinguished samurai house and the spirit of Zen.

History

Kotaku-ji was founded as the family temple of the Ogasawara clan, the distinguished house that served as military governors of Shinano Province. The founding priest is said to be Sesso Ijjun, and the temple flourished to the point that its holdings reportedly grew to more than a hundred thousand tsubo. Its fortunes shifted over the centuries, but in recent years a priest emerged from the Ogasawara family to lead its revival, with Takamoto Ogasawara, a professor emeritus of the former Komazawa University, serving as head priest. The temple carries on both its heritage as a samurai family temple and its Zen tradition since its founding.
