History
The name Naka-dake, meaning the middle peak, is said to derive from its position roughly in the middle of the ridge connecting Yari-ga-take and Hotaka-dake. As modern mountaineering developed, the summit became a well-known waypoint along the traverse route linking these famous peaks.
Access
The summit stands at 3,084 meters on the ridge marking the Nagano-Gifu boundary, requiring a long climb from the trailheads below. Transport to the nearest access points and the operating status of mountain huts vary greatly by season and year, so please confirm details through official sources before setting out.
Best season
Because it lies in the alpine zone, summer to early autumn (roughly July to September), after the snow has melted, is the usual climbing season. Weather on the ridge can change suddenly and winds can be strong, so allow ample time and carry proper equipment.
