Overview

The Yahagi River (Yahagi-gawa) flows from Nagano Prefecture through Gifu Prefecture and enters Mikawa Bay from Aichi Prefecture. It is the main stream of the Class A Yahagi River water system. Its uppermost reaches are also known as the Neba River.

Highlights

  • A wide watercourse crossing Nagano, Gifu, and Aichi Prefectures into Mikawa Bay
  • Designated the main stream of the Class A Yahagi River water system
  • The upper reaches also known as the Neba River
  • A river name traced to a settlement of arrow-making clans people

History

The name Yahagi is said to derive from a settlement of arrow-making clans people that once stood near Yahagi Bridge. Because attaching feathers to an arrow was called "hagu," the name became "Yahagi" (written 矢矧) and was later rewritten as 矢作. According to legend, Yamato Takeru made arrows from bamboo on a river islet during his eastern campaign and won victory, giving the river its name.

Access

The river can be reached from various points across its Nagano, Gifu, and Aichi drainage areas, with scenery shifting from the upper reaches down to the mouth at Mikawa Bay. Visitors should check information published by the municipalities along each stretch.

Best season

The river shows different faces through the seasons, from mountain-stream sections upstream to the estuary, with fresh greenery and autumn foliage highlighting the natural scenery along its course.
