History
The name "Kamikōchi" was originally written with the characters 神垣内 before the present characters (上高地) became common. It stems from the belief that Hotakami-no-Mikoto, deity of Hotaka Shrine, descended upon Mount Hotaka and is enshrined here at the shrine's inner sanctuary and Myōjin Pond. Preserved within the national park, it is also listed among the 100 Landscapes of Heisei.
Access
Located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. As private cars are restricted in this mountain area, check maps or official information for public transport and access details.
Best season
Best from early summer's fresh greenery to autumn's foliage. Because of the high elevation and winter closure, visiting during the open season is recommended.
