Overview
The Sendai River is a Class A river flowing through Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures before discharging into the East China Sea. With a total length of 137 km, it is known as the second-largest river in Kyushu after the Chikugo River.

History
Its uppermost reach lies in Kumamoto Prefecture and its upper reach in Miyazaki Prefecture. The river rises on the slopes of Mount Shiragatake and flows west across the Kakuto plain. After passing the Tsuruta Dam, it runs through the Sendai plain and empties into the East China Sea, with a basin covering about 1,600 square kilometers.
