Overview

Rinnō-ji is a Sōtō Zen temple in Aoba Ward, Sendai, with the mountain name Kongōhōzan. Said to have been founded in 1441, it is closely tied to the Date clan that ruled the Sendai domain. Though set on the northwestern edge of the city, its grounds hold a quiet stroll-style pond garden, making it a hidden retreat where the seasons unfold gently.

Highlights

  • A stroll-style pond garden that reveals the changing seasons
  • The quiet dignity of a Sōtō Zen temple linked to the Date clan
  • A long history traced back to a 1441 founding
  • Zen tranquility despite a location near the city

History

According to temple tradition its origins reach back to 1441, and over the centuries it enjoyed the patronage of the Date family. As the Date moved their base, the temple relocated as well, finally settling in Sendai. Keeping the dignity of a Sōtō Zen temple, it later became known for its refined garden, and today visitors come for both worship and garden viewing.

Access

The temple sits in Aoba Ward, Sendai, at roughly 38.28°N, 140.86°E, northwest of the city center. Routes by public transport or taxi, along with opening hours and garden access, can vary by season, so please confirm the latest details through official information before visiting.

Best season

Because the garden is the highlight, early summer with its vivid fresh greenery and autumn with foliage reflected on the pond are especially beautiful. The snow-dusted stillness of winter and the quiet mood of early spring also suit a Zen temple, rewarding a visit in any season.
