History

The garden was laid out in the late Meiji period by the Saito family, major landowners of this area, in what was then the town of Kanan in Monou District. A leading local house poured its wealth and sense of beauty into the grounds. Designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 2005, the garden was damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011 and closed, then reopened to visitors on 31 July of the same year.

Access

The garden lies in Maeyachi, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, around latitude 38.50 and longitude 141.19. Set in the Ishinomaki area northeast of the Sendai plain, it is convenient to reach by car. Some facilities may remain closed following the earthquake, so please check official information for the latest opening status and access routes.

Best season

The highlights of this stroll garden shift with the seasons: buds and blossoms in spring, green shade in summer, autumn color, and quiet stillness in winter. For those who wish to enjoy the changing hues of the trees, an autumn visit is especially recommended.
