Overview
Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park spreads across a hilltop in Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture. Known as a premier cherry-blossom spot in Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Great Views, it bursts into bloom in season with over 260 cherry trees, mostly Somei-yoshino. From the height you can survey Matsushima Bay and Mount Kinka, and the contrast of the bay's scattered islands against the blossoms is a view only the Three Great Views can offer. History
The park's name is said to derive from a legend that the traveling poet-monk Saigyo turned back at this very place. This hilltop bearing the name of the Saigyo Modoshi pine has long been cherished as a vantage point over the scenery of Matsushima. Nearby stands Matsushima Park, chosen among Japan's 100 finest urban parks, and the whole area has grown as a scenic setting adorning the celebrated Matsushima. For details of the legend, please check official sources.
Access
The park lies around 38.36 degrees north and 141.05 degrees east, on a hilltop in Matsushima Town. Matsushima-Kaigan Station on the JR Senseki Line is the gateway to Matsushima sightseeing, and the park sits on the rise reached by climbing the slope from there. Since walking access involves an uphill stretch, comfortable shoes are advised. For the exact route and parking, please confirm with official information.
Best season
The cherry-blossom season is above all spectacular, when over 260 trees, mostly Somei-yoshino, bloom together in spring for a duet with the islands of Matsushima Bay. Even outside blossom season the hilltop view of the bay and Mount Kinka is superb, with fresh greenery and the clear skies of autumn also well worth seeing.

Did you know?
💡 Matsushima ranks among Japan's Three Great Views alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate. Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park is a rare lookout from which to view Matsushima Bay from on high, taking in the islands large and small scattered across the water through a frame of cherry blossoms. Its appeal lies in a composition seen from above, quite different from viewing Matsushima near the water's surface.
