History
The Sendai Thirty-three Kannon is a Kannon pilgrimage that drew devotion across the former castle town of the Sendai domain, and Shishiochi Kannon-dō serves as its concluding 33rd station. The Kyōgamine ridge on which the hall sits also holds Zuihōden, the mausoleum of Date Masamune, showing how long this hillside has been a place of prayer for the people of Sendai. For details of the hall's founding, please refer to on-site signage or official information from the city.
Access
The hall lies in Taihaku Ward, Sendai, near 38.24°N, 140.86°E. It sits on a corner of Kyōgamine just south of central Sendai, reached by crossing a bridge over the Hirose River and climbing the steep Shishiochi-zaka slope to the entrance. Because it is close to Zuihōden, a visit combining the two is convenient. Check official sources for the latest public transport access and parking.
Best season
Kyōgamine is a ridge wrapped in trees, at its finest amid the fresh green of early summer or the coloring foliage of autumn. Paired with views of the Hirose River, it is a fine spot to take in the turning of the seasons at a slow pace.
