
Overview
Mount Gando rises to 1,484.6 meters on the prefectural border between Kawasaki in Miyagi and the city of Yamagata. Together with neighboring Minami-Gando (1,486 meters) just to the south, it forms a twin-peaked mountain, and it belongs to the Kita-Zao massif in the northern part of the Zao mountain range. A volcano set just south of Sasaya Pass, it is known for its sharply carved ridgeline. Chosen among the 100 Famous Tohoku Mountains and the 100 Famous Yamagata Mountains, it is a favorite of hikers seeking a genuine climb.

History
Mount Gando was shaped over long ages as a volcano forming part of Kita-Zao in the northern Zao range. Standing on the Miyagi–Yamagata border, it is rooted in the hiking culture of both prefectures and appears on both the 100 Famous Tohoku Mountains and the 100 Famous Yamagata Mountains lists. Positioned south of Sasaya Pass, a long-standing crossing point, it has been known to travelers within the network of pass roads and surrounding peaks.
Access
The mountain lies at about 38.20°N, 140.48°E, on the border between Kawasaki, Miyagi, and the city of Yamagata. St. Mary's Ski Resort sits on its eastern foot, while the Zao Dam on the Mamigasaki River lies to the west. Trails from the Sasaya Pass area and elsewhere are used, but as trailheads and transport vary by season, please confirm the details through official sources.
Best season
Early summer, when lingering snow meets fresh greenery, high summer with alpine flowers, and autumn when the ridge turns color are all recommended. As a serious peak above 1,400 meters, come prepared for sudden weather changes and early snowfall.
