Overview

The Port of Sendai is the common name for a dug-in harbor that is part of the Port of Sendai-Shiogama, spanning Miyagino Ward of Sendai City, Tagajo City, and Shichigahama Town in Miyagi Prefecture. Locally it is also called Sendai Shinko (New Port), a name dating from the time of its construction. Originally developed to form a coastal industrial zone, it later took on functions as a commercial port facing the Pacific.

Highlights

  • A dug-in harbor spanning three localities: Miyagino Ward, Tagajo, and Shichigahama
  • Known locally by the nickname Sendai Shinko, or New Port
  • A logistics hub visited by car carriers and RO-RO ships
  • Ferry routes linking it with the Port of Nagoya and Port of Tomakomai

History

Prompted by the 1964 designation of the Sendai Bay area as a New Industrial City, the harbor was created by excavating the sandy shore to form a coastal industrial zone. Commercial port functions were later added, and it opened for use in 1971. Miyagi Prefecture serves as the port authority.

Access

It lies across Miyagino Ward of Sendai City, Tagajo City, and Shichigahama Town, extending along the coast on the eastern side of the Sendai urban area.

Best season

The port facilities and shipping lanes can be observed year-round, though periods of settled weather make the coastal scenery easier to take in.
