Overview
Shiogama-Sendai Port is one of the leading harbors of Miyagi Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean along Sendai Bay. Designated as an international hub port, a specified port under Japan's port regulations, and a customs open port, it is counted among the country's core international harbors. Rather than a single dock, it is a broad port made up of four districts, Sendai, Shiogama, Ishinomaki and Matsushima, serving as a gateway for the sea and a backbone of logistics in the Tohoku region. For travelers it offers both the dynamic sight of ferries and container ships and the scenic coastline stretching toward Matsushima Bay.
Highlights
- ●The lively harbor scenery of the Sendai district with its container ships and ferries
- ●Scenic coastal views stretching toward Matsushima Bay
- ●The scale of one of Tohoku's foremost trading ports, an international hub harbor
- ●The varied character of four districts spanning Sendai, Shiogama, Ishinomaki and Matsushima
History
As a customs open port it opened on 27 January 1934, and has since grown into one of the prefecture's foremost trading ports, with harbor operations managed by Miyagi Prefecture. Under the unified name of Shiogama-Sendai Port, several districts were combined; the Sendai and Shiogama districts form the port area under maritime traffic law, while Ishinomaki is treated as a separate specified port and Matsushima falls outside that framework. This complex division reflects the port's layered history, and its cargo volume ranks among the highest of any Japanese port.
Access
The port spreads along the Sendai Bay coast near 38.27 degrees north and 141.02 degrees east, stretching from Sendai City through Shiogama and Matsushima. It can be reached from central Sendai by car or public transport, with logistics and commercial areas dotted around the Sendai district. Because the districts lie some distance apart, it helps to decide which area to visit in advance. Please check official information for the latest details on ferry schedules and whether tours are available.
Best season
As a coastal port it can be enjoyed year round, but spring through autumn is especially recommended, when the air is clear and the contrast of sea and sky is at its finest. On calm days the views toward Matsushima Bay shine, letting you take in both the lively harbor atmosphere and the natural scenery.

Did you know?
💡 Though it goes by the single name Shiogama-Sendai Port, it is in fact a wide port bundling four districts, Sendai, Shiogama, Ishinomaki and Matsushima, and has the unusual feature that the boundaries of the port are defined differently under each law, such as customs law and maritime traffic law. The inclusion of Shiogama in the name recalls the long history of the old port town that has long played a central role.
