Atsumi Onsen

Overview

Atsumi Onsen is a hot spring that once welled up along the Atsumi River, which flows through the southern end of Yamagata Prefecture and empties into the Sea of Japan. Formerly also written as Atsumi Onsen with different characters, its name is said to derive from the way its hot-spring water flowed through the Atsumi River into the sea and warmed those waters.

History

Hot spring water once welled up naturally along the Atsumi River, but in recent years it has been obtained by pumping it up from dug wells. The place name "Atsumi" is said to come from the way the spring water flowed through the Atsumi River into the sea and warmed it. It is also seen written in the older form as Atsumi Onsen.
