Overview

Usunono Shrine is an auxiliary shrine of Ise Jingu's Outer Shrine (Toyouke Daijingu, or Geku), ranked 14th among the Outer Shrine's 16 auxiliary shrines. Sharing the same shrine grounds is Agata Shrine, a subordinate shrine of the Outer Shrine, so the two can be visited together as a single site.

Highlights

  • Ranked 14th among the 16 auxiliary shrines of the Outer Shrine (Toyouke Daijingu)
  • The unusual arrangement of sharing grounds with Agata Shrine, a subordinate Outer Shrine shrine
  • Deep ties to Usuno, one of the wilderness plains of Yamada-hara
  • A shrine hall built in the shinmei-zukuri style

History

Both shrines are said to be closely connected to Usuno, also called Usunono, one of the wilderness plains that together made up the area known as Yamada-hara, in what was once Watarai District of Ise Province, today's Ise City. As auxiliary and subordinate shrines of the Outer Shrine, they have long been part of Ise Jingu's ritual system.

Access

The shrine stands in Ise City, in the area around the Outer Shrine (Geku), making it easy to visit together with worship at Geku itself. Checking official visitor information before your trip is recommended, since routes and conditions can change.

Best season

The shinmei-zukuri hall keeps a simple, calm appearance year-round, so the shrine can be visited comfortably any season as part of an Outer Shrine pilgrimage.
