Overview

Tsukiyomi-no-Miya is a Shinto shrine in Nakamura-cho, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, serving as one of the associate shrines (bekku) of the Naiku (Kotai Jingu) of Ise Jingu. It is also recorded as a Shikinaisha, a shrine listed in the Heian-era Engishiki register.

Highlights

  • The Shinmei-zukuri style main hall of Tsukiyomi-no-Miya
  • The neighboring Izanagi-no-Miya and Izanami-no-Miya
  • Its long history as a Shikinaisha shrine
  • The periodic rebuilding tradition of Shikinen Sengu

History

As an associate shrine of the Naiku, Tsukiyomi-no-Miya's halls are built in the Shinmei-zukuri style. Within the shrine precinct stand not only the main hall of Tsukiyomi-no-Miya but also the associate shrines of Izanagi-no-Miya and Izanami-no-Miya, all maintained under the same tradition of periodic rebuilding, known as Shikinen Sengu, followed by the Naiku. For the 62nd Shikinen Sengu, the ritual transfer (sengyo) at Tsukiyomi-no-Miya took place on the evening of October 6, 2014, roughly a year after the Naiku's own transfer.

Access

Located within the city area of Ise, not far from the Naiku, the shrine can be reached on foot or by public transport, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Naiku. Check current transport details before visiting.

Best season

The shrine can be visited year-round, but timing a visit around autumn, when key Shikinen Sengu rites have historically taken place, can add a sense of the shrine's ceremonial rhythm.
