Overview
Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple in the Ukyo Ward of Kyoto, belonging to the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism and functioning as a sub-temple outside the grounds of the head temple Myoshin-ji. Its mountain name is Daiun-zan and its principal image is Shaka Nyorai (the Buddha). Founded in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto, deputy to the Muromachi shogun, with the priest Giten Gensho as founding abbot, the temple is above all famed for its kare-sansui (dry landscape) rock garden, where stones set amid raked white gravel bring a profound calm. Listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto's foremost Zen temples.

History
Ryoan-ji was founded in 1450 (Hotoku 2) by Hosokawa Katsumoto as patron, with Giten Gensho installed as its founding abbot. Belonging to the Myoshin-ji school of Rinzai Zen, it has continued as a sub-temple outside the grounds of the great head temple Myoshin-ji. Its celebrated rock garden is regarded as one of Japan's finest examples of kare-sansui, and scholars have noted a hidden underlying structure in the layout that draws in the viewer's unconscious eye. When Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited Japan in 1975 and toured this garden with great admiration, the temple's fame spread across the world.

The temple stands in the Ryoanji Goryoshitacho area of Ukyo Ward, in the northwest of Kyoto.
