History
Saihō-ji is a Jōdo-sect temple said to have been founded in 1189, with the late-Heian Minister of the Left Ōimikado Tsunemune traditionally named as its founder. Ever since, it has served as the family temple of the Ōimikado house of the Fujiwara clan and of the Ayanokōji and Itsutsuji houses descended from Emperor Uda, forging deep ties with the great aristocratic families. It enshrines Amida Nyorai and bears the mountain name Gankai-san. For fuller history, please check official sources.
Access
The temple lies in Sakyō Ward, on the eastern side of Kyoto City, reached from within the Sakyō district. As it is normally closed to the public, ordinary visits reach only the gate, though the interior may be opened during special exhibition periods. For opening dates, viewing availability, and nearest transport, please check official sources.
Best season
Since it is normally closed, anyone hoping to see inside should time a visit to a special opening such as Kyoto's exhibitions of non-public cultural properties. Aiming for the spring or autumn special-opening seasons, when Kyoto's temples are lively, makes the visit easier to arrange.
