Overview

Nagaoka Tenmangu stands in the Tenjin district of Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture. Formerly ranked as a prefectural shrine, it is affectionately called Tenjin-san by local residents. Sitting on a corner of the land where the ancient Nagaoka-kyo capital once stood, it remains a beloved shrine of Tenjin worship, deeply rooted in the daily life and culture of the community.

History

The area of Nagaokakyo was once known as Nagaoka in Otokuni District of Yamashiro Province. In 784, Emperor Kanmu moved the capital here from Heijo-kyo, building the Nagaoka-kyo capital. Nagaoka Tenmangu lay at the southwestern edge of that capital, a site that still carries echoes of the ancient city. Today the shrine remains active in cultural events, continuing as a Tenjin-san at the heart of local faith and life.

Access

The shrine is in the Tenjin district of Nagaokakyo, near latitude 34.92 and longitude 135.68. Set in the town between Kyoto and Osaka, it is easy to reach by rail. For walking routes from the nearest station, bus services, and parking, it is best to check the official information of Nagaokakyo city or the shrine before your visit.

Best season

As part of its cultural program, the shrine holds the Kirishima Concert in late April and the Yoimiya Concert in late August. These events, which bring live classical music close at hand, are cherished by music-loving residents; timing your visit with a concert lets you enjoy worship and music together.
