History
Belonging to the Koyasan Shingon school, Kannon-ji has long been a center of devotion to its principal image, the Eleven-Headed Thousand-Armed Kannon. It stands as the first temple on the Twenty-Five Flower Temples of Kansai pilgrimage, linking Kannon worship with the seasonal beauty of flowers. The mountain name Fudarakusan refers to Fudaraku, the pure land of the Kannon bodhisattva, reflecting the temple's devotion to Kannon. For detailed accounts of its founding and history, please refer to official sources.
Access
The temple lies in the Kannonji district of Fukuchiyama in the Tamba region of Kyoto Prefecture, near latitude 35.30 and longitude 135.19. By public transport, visitors generally start from JR Fukuchiyama Station and continue by bus or taxi into the surrounding hills. During the hydrangea season, temporary guidance may be provided. Best season
The greatest attraction is the hydrangea season from June into July during the rainy period, when about 10,000 plants of some 100 varieties bloom, giving the temple its name as the Hydrangea Temple. Rain-soaked blue and purple blossoms coloring the grounds make this the most popular time to visit. Outside the flower season, fresh greenery and autumn foliage are also lovely, and weekdays away from peak bloom offer a calmer atmosphere for quiet worship.
